Tempus Valutum
Tempus Valutum is hand-built during August, September and October 2006.
The clock is using six Nixie tubes of the IN 14 type. These tubes originate from
old Russian army stocks but were never used. Due the fact that Nixies, when not
in use, have an unlimited shelflife, the tubes can be considered as new. These
types of Nixies I particularly like due the fact that they use the digit
"2" as digit "5" but upside down and reversed... Also the
pure "tube look" of the handblown top part of the Nixie adds to that
retro feeling they radiate.
The idea for Valutum originates from the saying "Time is Money".
Furthermore it is strongly influenced by the vast amounts of different values
that I come across frequently during my international travels, the holidays I
had as a kid with my parents and the currency changes that occur over-time (countries
converting to the Euro and countries no longer in existence). If carefully
studied, you will be able to retrieve quite a lot of different currencies from
different countries (inclusive former Yugoslavia). This includes currencies that
are no longer in use and even old Dutch 1940-1945 "war money" is
included in its design. Not only that but, as with all of my designs, it also
has a deeper and less obvious purpose... That's the beauty of Art and I leave
that to you to interpret!
